Yellowknife NT, May 2020
Slobbery Night by Gus is the artist's first homage to Vincent van Gogh, an artist whose work provides him great inspiration. Like van Gogh, Gus understands the life of a struggling artist who is misunderstood in his time.
'The Starry Night' painting by the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter depicts van Gogh's view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise. A quaint imaginary village is portrayed below the swirly sky, presumably a place van Gogh would rather be. With compassion and empathy, Gus' 'Slobbery Night' depicts the view from the east-facing window of Gus' own nutty little balcony, with his own favourite place (his barbecue) portrayed below his magical sky of swirling drool.
